Fishing in Patagonia
The defrosting waters of the Andes's high peaks are the
origin of the hydrography of the landscapes of southern Argentina
and, as a consequence, of the angling that
has been practiced for a long time in this region of the country.
Clear, cold and oxygenated, they assure an adequate environment
for the develop of salmons and trouts,
famous due to its size and abundance.
Angling for trouts and other salmonids is
possible today thanks to their introduction in these rivers
at the beginning of the century by perito Francisco Pascasio
Moreno. They are the aim of anglers from all around the world
because, even though they aren’t natives, they are pure
which means they are attractive and combative.
Surrounded by a breathtaking landscape, Patagonia is known
throughout the world because of the excellence in its fishing
and is ideal for angling in its three modalities:
fly casting, trolling and spinning.
Season
The fishing season in Patagonia (on the Andes ´s side)
is from mid October of each year to April of the next one,
except in Tierra del Fuego where it starts on November and
ends in March.
To bare in mind
A fishing permit is needed in Patagonia that can be obtained
in local authorities´s offices or authorized angling
shops and its cost is different for residents and non residents
and for minors.
Once the permit is bought, you´ll be given a National
Park regulation specifying the places where you can or you
cannot fish.
You have to bare in mind that in many cases it isn´t
allowed to fish in some parts of the rivers, lakes or streams.
The maximum amount of units per person varies from province
to province. Generally, the number of salmonids (trouts and
salmons) allowed is two per person per day.
In the pejerrey´s case, sometimes the maximum is up
to 20 units. There is no limit for the carpa.
It is absolutely forbidden to fish pejerrey with living bait.
